Under stress, our most dominant [nervous] system is set into motion. For example, several years ago Mike and I were involved in a car accident. We were driving on a narrow, two-lane highway at night, and suddenly something huge flew at our windshield. Mike swerved over the double yellow line. Luckily, the oncoming lane was empty. The massive flying object missed us and hit the station wagon behind us. Mike pulled over to the side of the road and stopped. I didn’t move; my body felt numb, and my breathing slowed. I didn’t want Mike to get out of the car. In my mind I could see him getting hit by oncoming traffic. Mike, his heart racing, was thinking only of taking action. He opened hid door and leaped out to see if anyone was hurt.

I will admit that I’m not a fan of President Obama. If that turns you off, so be it — I will always speak my mind, and you have every right to read what you want. I dislike that he is a micromanger as characterized by the Wall Street Journal. However, in all fairness, this [...]

I love reading the Readers’ Digest because they have stories of heroes in every issue. It’s always uplifting to read [...]

How many of us make a living out of what we are passionate about? I know there has been a lot written about doing what you love to do, and there are people and businesses that help you uncover your passions (think Gallup’s StrengthsFinder). But how many of us are actually doing these things? There [...]

Dirty Jobs, Worst Jobs – I Don’t Want it! Seems Mike Rowe of Discovery’s “Dirty Jobs” doesn’t have a corner on the market for worst jobs. Popular Science just released a story on “The Worst Jobs in Science.” “We solicited nominations from more than a thousand working scientists and culled the list for the most [...]

A Boy and His Dog – But Unlike Any Other! As I was eating breakfast this morning I read this story in the Lexington Herald-Leader: “A boy with autism and his dog find a world in common” I’m not sure what I could say about this beyond the fact that I’m amazed at the intelligence [...]

Do you have your 2009 goals yet? No, I’m not talking about resolutions. Oh, the difference? Resolution: a resolve or determination: to make a firm resolution to do something; the act of resolving or determining upon an action or course of action, method, procedure, etc. Syn: aim, declaration, intention, purpose. (dictionary.com) Goal: the result or achievement [...]
