I can’t remember how many times I’ve had to talk a manager through a tough discussion with an employee.
No one likes to be on the receiving end of tough counseling and very few people like giving it. I know Mary Poppins said “a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down” but when talking with some employees, you have to give them straight cod liver oil. Too often, employees with problems will deflect the issue, blame someone or something else, or find some excuse of time, tools, or your behavior.
This video is a bit extreme, but makes the point.
Next time you’re dealing with an employee problem, the best thing may be to not add the sugar.
