I love it when a plan comes together. Yesterday I wrote on the value of contribution rather than competitive wage. This morning I see in our local news an excellent example of this.
As college basketball followers know, UK just dismissed coach Billy Gillespie because ‘things just weren’t working out.’ And today, the announcement of coach John Calipari becoming the new UK basketball coach is in the news.
So how does this follow my discussion of yesterday?
Remember: It’s Value that Matters
Coach Calipari has a good record: 252-69 (.785) at Memphis, 412-136 (.752) overall. He has built a loyal fan base, not just for the team but for himself as well. What caught my attention, and probably plenty of other people’s, is that Calipari will become the highest-paid coach in college basketball with an 8-year, $31.65M contract.
Remember, yesterday I wrote that the important thing to focus on is the value of the contribution, not the competitive wage. (And if it wasn’t clear yesterday, I meant that can go up or down.) The value of coach Calipari’s contribution is expected to be much greater than any other coaches’ to this point, regardless of the competitive salary for basketball coaches.
And think about the fact that this is happening when companies are laying off people, salaries are being cut, people are cutting back spending, and the economy is in a general funk.
Just proves that even in tough times, people are hiring, and good talent is getting good jobs with good pay.
